Tels sont les derniers mots du témoignage que Denise Holstein rédigea à son retour de déportation durant l’été 1945. Ces trois années qui ont brisé son adolescence sont ici racontées avec la simplicité de ses dix-huit ans et la précision d’une mémoire encore imprégnée de ces événements dramatiques. Victime des lois antijuives, elle voit son père une première fois arrêté le 6 mai 1942 et temporairement interné au camp de Drancy. La seconde fois, Denise est prise avec ses parents lors de la grande rafle des Juifs de Rouen à la mi-janvier 1943. Hospitalisée, elle bénéficie du secours que peut encore apporter l’Union générale des Israélites de France et ne réintègre pas Drancy. Au centre de Louveciennes, elle devient, à seize ans, monitrice d’un groupe d’enfants orphelins de parents déportés. Elle partage bientôt leur sort quand ses parents sont transférés le 20 novembre 1943 à Auschwitz II-Birkenau où ils sont assassinés.
